Project Revitalisation of agricultural soils

Humus-rich soils as CO2 sinks and for promoting biodiversity

Conventional agriculture, the heavy use of pesticides and climate change are causing major losses of fertile soil worldwide. In Germany alone, an area the size of more than 100 football pitches is degraded every day. The quality and quantity of humus in the soil plays a fundamental role for the local ecosystem, groundwater quality, food production and local biodiversity.

The solution

This project rebuilds humus layers on agricultural land. This increases the soil's potential to absorb and store carbon from the atmosphere. The soil becomes more fertile and resilient to extreme weather fluctuations. The humus build-up is regularly measured and documented at all sites so that progress can be tracked continuously.

The impact

Humus-rich soils can absorb and sequester large amounts of CO2, thus directly combating climate change. In addition, humus-rich soil helps to maintain a balanced and flourishing ecosystem, creating a rich habitat for insects and wildlife. The high nutrient content in the humus layer promotes plant growth, thereby ensuring higher crop yields and resilience, which in turn significantly reduces the need for pesticides and fertilisers.
